Hello, my name is Shane Willems, President and CEO of SignSite.com. I have been involved in the sign industry for over 10 years. For the last 6 years I have been 100% focused on selling signs over the internet. Quite successfully! To say the least it has become something I am passionate about.


I would like to start by sharing how I envision selling signs online will impact sign companies around the world. The internet has much to offer the sign industry. A sign company can have much more than a brochure or catalog online. Any sign company big or small can have a fully stocked and functioning online store! I look at the internet as a big leveraging tool. With a little effort and creativity a small shop can have the same opportunity to sell signs all around the world as a large corporation.


The following is a brief list of the areas of benefits a sign business can expect if they take their shop online:


  • An online shop in a small community can sell at a higher price online than in their community
  • An online shop can vastly increase their volume.
  • An online shop can focus in on the most profitable items of the business with their marketing. They can focus on what they do best and sell more than enough of that item to make a good living. In short it gives them the power of choice, with the customer base to support that choice!
  • An online shop can become much more production oriented because their quantity of the same type products will increase allowing them to become more efficient.
  • An online shop will cut vinyl waste because they will produce more of the same color at once. They can combine orders to fill up the dead spaces on their runs.
  • It will give them the opportunity to grow into areas of the industry they previously could not have considered. For example a shop trying to service just local customers may never build up enough orders to justify purchasing a large format printer, engraver, etc. With the internet they will have the opportunity to market these services outside of their community. This will give them the added sales needed to justify this equipment.
  • An online shop can benefit locally as well. An online store will add convenience to transactions on a local level as well as around the world.
  • An online shop with the right technology will eliminate the need for most graphic charges. The customer designs it on line and the sign company has a clean file to produce from.
  • An online sign shop is a Win Win situation. The customers will actually enjoy designing their own item. The sign company will enjoy selling to a much larger piece of the world.

For most people the internet remains this mysterious black hole, capable of swallowing huge portions of their budgets. Our intent is to shed some light on the many benefits the internet brings to sign companies. We will also explain how to start down the right path, and what pitfalls to avoid.
